Matt Owen pleaded guilty to assault by beating last year
A former lawyer at accountancy giant Deloitte has been fined £1,000 by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) following a conviction for assault by beating.
Matt Owen flew into a rage last summer when his then girlfriend left his boozy birthday brunch at the five-star Brown’s Hotel in Mayfair, London. The University of Birmingham business graduate followed her and shouted and screamed at her about “other men”, according to reports at the time. It was also said that Owen grabbed his victim by the wrists and spat in her face.
As Legal Cheek reported in July, Owen pleaded guilty to one count of assault by beating. Owen — who completed his Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) and Legal Practice Course (LPC) at The University of Law (then The College of Law) — received an 18-month community order, 40 hours of unpaid work and ordered to pay £170 by Westminster Magistrates’ Court.
Despite the conviction, we’ve now learnt Owen can continue to practise law. The SRA has this week opted to fine the ex-Deloitte man £1,000 after he accepted his conduct had undermined the trust the public places in the profession, according to a regulatory agreement. He was also rebuked and ordered to pay £600 in costs.
Owen joined Pinsent Masons as a trainee before joining Clyde & Co as an associate. He spent time working in Dubai before landing a role at Deloitte. He is no longer at the accountancy firm.
